It can be a real challenge to find a tip within 140 characters that's succinct and helpful.

Please welcome the latest daily testing tip contributors.

Monday:  Dennis Gurock
Tuesday : Vips Gupta
Wednesday: Matt Harp
Thursday: Pablin Mazzeo
Friday: Jille Berends

Its great to see some repeat contributors.

I look forward to a fun six weeks of fantastic tips!

Free E-book available for download - "If I were a testcase I would..."

I'm very excited (and a little proud) to announce the launching of the e-book "if i were a testcase I would...".

Many of you know that the ebook started on twitter with the musing "If I were a testcase I would....". The response was huge. The idea for the book goes to Curious Tester, so many thanks Parimala.

Thanks also to the Software Testing Club who I collaborated with to make this book a reality. You guys are making such a difference in the testing community. So thank you all.

Thanks to the sponsors who very generously supported Chandru's Fund. ADTMAG.com, TestRail, Testing Times and Moolya.  This book is in aid of his ongoing medical needs.

Of course I can't complete the thanks you's without a nod to Andy Glover aka Cartoon Tester for supplying his wonderful cartoons. Is your response in cartoon format?

Download the book, see if your response made it into the book. Apologies if it didn't the oversight is not intentional, but there were so many!

If you celebrate Christmas, have a wonderful Christmas. If you don't have a great holiday and I will see you all in the new year.

P.S
I'm looking for volunteers willing to contribute a tweet a week for the dailytestingtip. It's a great way to help out the testing community and get yourself a bit of a profile. ( I profile all contributors on the front page of this blog).

So, if you think you have what it takes, why not contact me Anne-Marie dailytestingtip@gmail.com.

Cartoon Tester Meets Daily Testing Tip

Andy Glover aka Cartoon Tester has very kindly agreed to donate some of his fabulous cartoons to the upcoming E-Book "If I were a test case I would ...."

Many thanks Andy for such a generous offer.

The interest and response to this book has been fantastic with over 300 responses coming in to the challenge. Companies big and small have asked me for advertising. There's talk of an upcoming article in a major magazine.

But we want more!

We want more companies to advertise. Remember all proceeds go to charity, the Chandru Fund.

Advertising packages will be announced on Monday.

If I were a testcase I would......

Daily Testing Tip has put out a challenge today. Its asking testers to complete the following phrase:

"If I were a testcase I would........." and to add the #dttip tag at the end.

There have been some terrific responses such as:

@msdeibel: If I were a testcase I would fail randomly so ppl start investigating and exploring using brains

@michaelbolton: If I were a test case, I would ask "Why me? Why am I better than some other test case?" #dttip

and my personal favourite:

@rob_lambert: If I were a heavily scripted TC I'd draw on some legs, print myself out and run like the wind for a life of freedom and free thinking #dttip

We are going to collate all responses and publish them in an e-book which will be free to download. We are looking to raise money for the Chandru Fund through sponsorship of the book in return for strategic advertising.

How can you help?

We need your responses. Send in your twitter response to "If I was a testcase I would....." by adding the hashtag #dttip to the end.

If you don't have a twitter account, you can email me at dailytestingtip@gmail.com.

How can you help?
We are looking for sponsorship big and small. If you think your company may like to sponsor this book, get them to contact me directly at amcharrett@testingtimes.ie, we are offering attractive advertising packages.

So what are you waiting for? Get thinking and get writing. Its a bit of fun and your helping a worthy cause.

Sponsorship queries: amcharrett @ testingtimes.ie

Email responses: dailytestingtip @ gmail.com

And the winner is.....

The winning vote was:

Think testing as a challenge; it is not simply verification and validation of what is written and communicated in the starting

So congratulations to Vipul Gupta @vipsgupta for wining the vote.

Coming in a close second was:

Follow @dailytestingtip for some real good tips.

As you can see from the final count, there were many very popular tips and sometimes the one you think is going to win, just doesn't seem to get enough legs. Thats why I get to chose Editors Choice.

I've based Editors choice on a) my personal favorite :), b) the number of RT's it got and c) the number of votes it received. Based on these criteria, I am proud to announce:

Editors Choice

Testing "Learning is like rowing upstream: not to advance is to drop back" proverbs http://bit.ly/bVRTKT

by Albert Gareev  http://twitter.com/AGareev

Again, congratulations to both winners. Both winner and Editor's choice will receive a copy of the first edition of The Testing Planet.

We got a total of 210 votes in, so a huge thank you to all endured the countless tweets to vote & eventually could resist no longer and voted for their personal favourite.

P.S Daily Testing Tip will be taking a break from polls. We are looking into alternative ways for people to express their favourite tip.

Poll Daddy Results

Vote for your #dttip

Anyone think that Tag Tuesday wasn't going to happen yesterday? Even when I'm away #dttip continues to thrive. Thanks to everyone who sent out a tweet yesterday urging people to share a software testing tip, another great sign of our strong testing community.

Have you noticed how Tag Tuesday is starting earlier and earlier in the week? This weeks first tip came in last Friday. It's great, feel free to share whenever the inspiration hits you!

I've found some time to put together a poll to vote for most popular #dttip from yesterday, partly due to jetlag and also because fortunately for me there were less tips to vote on.
While the tips were down in volume, the quality of the tips continued to shine. I have my particular favourites, what are your top three?

PS If I've left any tips out, sincere apologies. I blame it all on twitter.

Daily Testing Tip Cloud

Another successfull #dttip day yesterday. We had over 30 tips come in yesterday,so many thanks to all contributors.

A couple of personal favourites were:

@Unlicensed2test
: Get a 'bounce buddy'. Someone you can talk to about anything and bounce ideas off.

@artofsqa: Sometimes you have to poke the code with a sharp stick to find out where it bleeds.

@joelmonte: Testing ideas may come to you at the weirdiest times, keep a notebook handy to write them down & use them later.

For a complete list of #dttip here is the feed

Tweet Cloud
I think this is interesting. It shows the last 150 words used yesterday. I'm still looking for a better way to display #dttip in a graphical format. If anyone has any ideas leave a comment below

Editor's pick was:

I've made a poll again. Because the large amount of tips, I've opened up the voting, so you can now choose up to 5 tips in one vote. So enjoy.

Tag Tuesday

There was another frantic day of sharing software testing tips yesterday. Many thanks to those on contributed.

There were some fantastic tips yesterday. In fact, I've noted a few that caught my eye and have made a mental note to try them out, in particular jbtestpilots tool suggestions.

These are my personal favourites:

@JeroenRo for : Holding ice with warm hands is like testing without requirements, you need other means to preserve the object otherwise its gone

@can_test : If you don't know what flowers look like don't weed the garden.

Which one was your personal favourite?

The full list can be viewed here Tag Tuesday 27th April 2010
Here is a list of everyone's tips. Many thanks to you all for making it such a fun day. I've listed the tips here for you to go through. My personal favourite was:

'Ever tried, Ever failed, No matter. Try again, Fail again, Fail Better' Samuel Beckett  by @esconfs, but perhaps that's because he's an Irishman, Beckett that is not @esconfs.

Test out your skills and help the testing community. Daily testing tip is inviting you on send in your favourite tip on Tuesdays. Its simple, just add #dttip to your tweet.

The tip can be on anything related to testing, a tool you like, a way of using a
tool, an approach or technique you favour, just make sure you include

Great ones will appear in @dailytestingtip and perhaps even an e-book.
